About Renoma

A few words about Renoma

Dom Handlowy Renoma is a unique place in Wroclaw. During its decades-long history (it opened on April 2, 1930), the building delighted with its unique facade, which featured original gilding, as well as unusual portrait sculptures depicting the faces of people coming from different continents. This was meant to symbolize not only the internationality of the merchandise, but, above all, openness to other people: respect for their person and professed views. These timeless values are as important to us as they were to the Wertheim brothers – the founders of this facility.

The passage of time and the requirements of modernity made it indispensable to revitalize the building. At the same time, its comprehensive modernization and expansion was carried out by the then owner, Centrum Development & Investments. The reopening took place in 2009. On its meticulously restored facade one can admire, among other things, more than a hundred portrait sculptures, as well as multicolored, shimmering tiles, partly decorated with real gold.

Renoma is owned by Globalworth Poland Real Estate N.V. (GPRE), a Polish office real estate platform, listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange since April 2017. The company’s portfolio consists of a variety of high-standard office and office/retail properties located in Warsaw and other major Polish cities – Wroclaw, Krakow, Lodz, Gdansk and Katowice.

Did you know…

• The area now occupied by Renoma remained almost undeveloped from the 13th century until the end of the 17th century. It constituted the foreground of the medieval city fortifications. An extension of Swidnicka Street was a wooden bridge, extending diagonally from Swidnicka Gate in a southeastern direction so that its terminus was at the site of the present inner courtyard.

• The skeletal structure of the “Wertheim”, weighing 3,800 tons, was made at the “Carlshütte” steelworks in Walbrzych, which specialized in long-span steel structures. The main structure, which consisted of steel columns and transoms and ceramic floor slabs, was erected in a few months. The entire structure was built after just eight months of construction.

•The inner south courtyard was lined with African rosewood, the carpet sales room with Caucasian walnut, and the restaurant located on the fifth and sixth floors used Makassar ebony.

• Lighting in the interior courtyards was provided by four giant stalactite chandeliers attached to the truss of the glass roof. Located on the fifth and sixth floors, the restaurant seated 400 people, and its rooms opened onto terraces overlooking the entire city and the panorama of the Giant Mountains. One part of it was a dining room, while the other had a dance floor. There was also a special exit to the roof, where a walking terrace was arranged, lit by miniature lanterns.

• An underground streetcar was to run under Świdnicka Street. This was one of the ideas of the Wroclaw “Miastoprojekt” when, on the wave of prosperity of the 1970s, the management of the then “Renoma” planned to carry out a comprehensive modernization of the building.

• The Wroclaw building is the largest historic building of its kind in Poland and the only surviving department store of the pre-war “Wertheim”.
